Germany will face Spain in the semifinals of tennis’ 2025 Davis Cup Final 8 after defeating Argentina 2-1 Thursday (20 November) evening in Bologna, Italy.
Germany’s quarterfinal win over Argentina improves their record to 7–4 at the event.
In the first match, Tomás Martín Etcheverry of Argentina defeated Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany 7–6(3), 7–6(7) in a close contest that went to tie-breaks in both sets.
Struff had a 2–0 lead in the opening set and was leading until Etcheverry broke back in the eighth game for four games all. From there, the pair exchanged held service games until the Argentine triumphed in the tie-break, 7–3.
There were no breaks of serve in the second set, pushing it to another tie-break. Etcheverry again came out on top, 9–7, to take the match.
Germany’s Alexander Zverev, the Olympic gold medallist at Tokyo 2020, also won in straight sets against Argentina’s Francisco Cerúndolo, 6–4, 7–6(3). It was a routine, if not runaway, victory for Zverev, the world No. 3, who broke in the first set’s sixth game to get on top of the scoreboard.
He would then go on to win the second set in a tie-break, 7–3, after neither player managed to break the other.
In the final match of the day, the Argentine pairing of Andres Molteni and Horacio Zeballos raced to a set lead, taking the first in just 31 minutes 6-4.
But the Germans pairing of Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz answered back, taking the second set 6-4. That pushed the match to a third set that would decide who advanced to the semifinals.
In the third set, both pairings exchanged games back and forth. A tiebreaker was required to determine the match, with the Germans emerging victorious after an extended duel, 7-6 (12-10).
The Davis Cup Final 8 continues Friday (21 November) with the semifinal match-up between Italy and Belgium.
